Jonas Lie

Jonas Lie was born in Moss, Norway. He took drawing lessons in Paris and often visited the Louvre and Luxembourg museums. In 1893 he moved to New York City and studied under the instruction of Dewing Woodward at Felix Adler's Ethical Culture School. He graduated in 1897 and worked for a textile factory while also taking classes at Cooper Union. Lie received critical support from the early 1910s through 1930s. During this time he had numerous shows throughout the country. Lie was also a member of the most prestigious art societies. He is known for his early Tonalist-inspired landscapes and exceptional mountain and coastal scenes. He is one of the most celebrated landscape painters of his time.
